HOW TO CLEAN YOUR MAKE UP BRUSHES
These are all places that I have seen countless girls apply their makeup. Most times, it is with those dirty brushes that have been building up dirt at the bottom of their makeup bag for months (or even years!) Cleaning your brushes is crucial for keeping the quality of your brushes in tact for a long time, but most importantly, your skin will become the victim if you do not keep your brushes clean.
I do spritz my brushes daily with some anti-bacterial brush cleaner and wipe them on a clean towel after each use. However, as the week goes on, some of the makeup builds up in the brushes and the spray just doesn't cut it. Here's how I go about deep cleaning my makeup brushes at the end of the week!
It doesn't take much! All you really need is some baby shampoo, a clean towel and some anti-bacterial spray like this one. Another item that can be very helpful are brush guards. These help keep the shape of your brushes and eliminate that "fraying of hairs" problem that often goes on with makeup brushes. I personally can't live without them now! They come in tons of different sizes so they will fit the tiniest eyeliner brush to the biggest powder puff.
Here are the simple steps!
- Gather all of your brushes together near a sink.
- Put a very small amount of baby shampoo (I use Johnson and Johnson's) in the palm of your hand.
- Taking one brush at a time, and gently rub them in the baby shampoo.
- Take each brush and run it under warm water, using your fingers to rinse the shampoo out.
- Squeeze the excess water from the brush hairs and lay them on a clean, dry towel.
- Take each brush and gently wipe it back and forth on the towel to get as much water out as possible.

Steps
1)Wash your hands and face! Before touching your face, always wash your hands with an antibacterial soap and warm water. Make sure your face is clean before applying makeup. To clean your face properly, get a good cleanser from your dermatologist. If you can't afford a dermatologist, try a lot of different products and see which ones work better for you! But remember, products from Walmart, Walgreens, Target, etc. all contain the same ingredients because they can't sell any higher concentration of benzoyl peroxide (the cleansing ingredient).
2)Apply moisturizer. Before starting, always use sunscreen, especially if you have problems with hyper-pigmentation (when your skin is healing and is slightly darker than the natural skin). It's better to get a moisturizer separate from your SPF because then your SPF will be stronger. If you have very low melanin amounts you need to use SPF 45. If you have olive, dark skin etc. then just use around SPF 15.
3)Smooth. With a concealer brush or foundation brush, gently stipple that's one shade lighter than your skin tone under the eye to cover any darkness. Also use your concealer on zits, red spots or other imperfections. Now blot it in using your middle finger. Make sure you dab, rather than wipe with your finger, otherwise you will take all the concealer off. Also, you can use foundation as concealer, but using actual concealer will give you better results.
4). If you have acne mineral makeup it's much better for your skin than normal foundation. Use Bare Minerals or Prescriptives; no cheap stuff. Remember your skin is your biggest breathing organ! Girls with oilier skin might want to stick to powder, and girls with drier skin might prefer liquid/cream foundation or tinted moisturizer. More oily skin can use matte gels or silicone based primer which help to lower the level of oil produced.
5)Comb. Using a brow brush, clean mascara brush or toothbrush, comb your eyebrows up and across, and softly apply eyeshadow (matching your eyebrow color) to fill in brows, making them appear fuller. If you have full eyebrows, skip this step. Set your brows in place using a brow brush with gel, clear mascara, or a brow brush with hairspray. Again, this isn't imperative, but one of those extra things you might want to do before a date or another occasion you want to look your best.
6)Shadow. Use a brush to apply a creamy colored and slightly iridescent and glowing skin tone shade. If you are going for a tan look, use a soft bronze color. If you are going for a cover up color, use a soft skin tone one. Some shimmery white crisply lining the eyes can open them up.
7)Blush. Apply gel blush to the apples of your cheeks. Smile, blend up and in a circular motion, always blending towards the temple. You can also follow your cheekbone. Blend, blend. You can also use a powder blush, but be careful as they tend to pack more of punch. Less is more. You can also use lipstick - rub it between your fingers so it's warmed up and then apply it directly to your cheeks.
8)Curl. Although it is hardly necessary, you can sometimes use an eyelash curler, even when applying clear mascara. It can make your eyelashes look very professional. Mascara goes on top and bottom lashes- always apply it thicker on the outer lashes. It makes your eyes look big and sexy. Apply 1 or 2 coats on the top lashes, and use what is left for the bottom lashes.
9)Apply lip balm. Fill in entire lip using a tinted lip balm. Then, using your finger or brush, spread gloss on top. Find out your skin tone, and the colors that match it. Always use a transparent gloss over tinted lip balm
.
10)Gloss. Lip Gloss is great for a light, glossy look. It's cute enough for school and adds a perfect glow to your finished look. Just apply it on your lips and love it through the day. You might need to apply more, if it begins to wear off. Use it over your tinted lip balm or light, natural shade of lipstick.
11)Eye shadow. First, put white shadow all over your eyes to highlight and power up your eye shadow color. Then, choose a color you like and apply it underneath the crease of your eye lid. Keep the color light and natural.
12)Remember that less is more. If you've gone overboard on your eyeshadow, blush, or lipstick you can use toilet paper or tissues to dab away some color. Make sure to keep in mind that light and fresh makeup is in, while caked-on makeup isn't.
13)Removing makeup. Always remove your makeup before you go to bed, to help keep your skin healthy and wrinkle free. Use a moisturizing cleansing cloth or wash and clean your whole face evenly (including the places where there is no makeup).
Tips
- Don't always try to play it safe by being natural. From time to time try brighter colors for your mascara and eyeliner and sometimes play with different colors for your lips.
- Not only makeup can enhance your pretty self! Try nail polish to make your face pop with a bright color but sometimes just do a color to make your nails look healthy, like a UV ray coat.
- If you put lots of makeup around your eyes, you have to put little on your lips, and vise versa. If you put eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara, you can only put some light colored lip gloss.
- A common mistake made with foundation is the mask-effect, leaving your face stained and very unnatural. To prevent this, use medium coverage powder or tinted moisturizer. Blend and blend, and what? Blend!
- Too much eyeliner is never good. It depends on your eye color: green & blue eyes can apply as much as they would like, and brown eyes should always do it on top and bottom. But if one has small eyes, be extra careful to not use too much. It also helps if one applies eyeliner just on top. Always draw the liner as close to the lash line as possible.
- If you have very light skin, use pale pinks. If you have medium skin, use sandy pinks. If you have bronze, chocolate, or ebony skin choose deep, rich colors, like soft plum or deep bronze. If you have yellow or olive skin, look for shades like pink, tawny or rose, and stay away from peach and bronze. The wrong blush makes you look dirty, bruised, pasty or trashy. Cream blush looks the most fresh and natural.
- Use a mascara that has a base primer coat and a constructing top coat. The primer helps your lashes prepare for the mascara. L'Oreal Volume Shocking is really great because there are two separate wands and the second one is a tiny comb that separates your lashes.
- Draw a black or brown line the closest you can get to your top lash line, but draw the line by making small dashes at a time. Then get a shadow that is the same color as the liner (in this case black or brown) and go over the liner. You don't need to smudge it, but if you need to, use a cotton swab. Viola! Smoky, and modern.
- Make sure your eyebrows are natural-looking. Just tweeze stray hairs. Do not over-pluck! Over-plucking is a very common mistake that teenage girls make. To know what shape you should tweeze follow these instructions:
- Picture a straight line from the inner corner of your eye going straight down the side of your nose. Follow that line upwards to find where your brow should start.
- Again from your nose, move up diagonally through the center of your eye to your eyebrow. That is where your eyebrow should curve upwards.
- Finally, a line from the tip of your nose to the outer corner of your eye will lead you to the point where your eyebrow should end.
